Ron Mistafa was a 16 year member of the City of Calgary
Police Service.
Over
ten years was spent in the police service dog unit and served
with distinction. Ron Mistafa has been training dogs for
over 20 years.
He began
his career of dog training with Schutzhund and after a short
time in the sport took part in the 1985 Canadian Nationals.
That same year he was accepted into the Calgary K-9 Unit
and began his 14 week training course with PSD Charly and
was trained by Brian Amm.
Ron
trained several dogs and helped with the training of many
other dogs during that time. The 1988 Winter Olympics came
by and that duration was a very good learning time for him.
Not only did he learn of the many aspects of security for
such events, but he was also trained a year before the Olympics
with an explosives detection dog. The dog he had then was
EDD ARCO.
Explosive
Detection became a forte of his and has kept up with it
ever since. Ron went on after the Olympics to become the
units head trainer for many years.
He
participated in many courses through out North America and
trained handlers from other jurisdictions across Canada
and helped to set a standard for Calgary at that time.
In '95/'96
Ron decided to leave the department to strike out on his
own and as a result is now heavily involved with training
dogs in Bosnia for landmine clearance.
